Australia has appointed Mr. James Baxter as its next Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva. The WTO is a global platform where 164 Member nations establish international trade rules, resolve trade disputes, and negotiate agreements. Australia holds a key role in the WTO and is actively involved in modernizing trade rules to address contemporary global trade challenges. Together with other WTO Members, Australia is striving to present a substantial reform package during the upcoming 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC13).
Mr. Baxter, a seasoned career official from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has been appointed to this significant role. He has held various positions, including First Assistant Secretary in the Office of Global Trade Negotiations, and he has previous international experience as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Permanent Mission to the WTO in Geneva, as well as assignments in Belgium and Japan.
The outgoing Ambassador and Permanent Representative, George Mina, is acknowledged for his contributions to advancing Australia's interests in the WTO since 2020.
