Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, recently engaged in her first bilateral conversation with Israel's newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Israel Katz. During the discussion, Minister Joly reiterated Canada's support for Israel's right to exist and defend itself in accordance with international law and humanitarian law. She strongly condemned Hamas' terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, expressing concern about its treatment of hostages and the use of gender-based violence in warfare. Canada called for the immediate release of all hostages and offered support for investigations into the gender-based violence.

Minister Joly also expressed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinian civilians in Gaza and emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring their access to life-saving humanitarian aid. Canada reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution, promoting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians.

Additionally, the discussion touched upon the threat posed by Hezbollah and Iran-backed groups to Israel's regional security, with Minister Joly highlighting Canada's diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and mitigate the humanitarian impact.

2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Canada-Israel bilateral relations, underscoring the enduring ties between the two nations.
