China Urges Restraint and Cooperation to Ease Tensions in Red Sea
The United States has reportedly requested China's assistance in urging Tehran to control the Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels responsible for attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. However, US officials have observed limited cooperation from Beijing.
China has been in close communication with various parties to address the escalating tensions in the Red Sea, which is a crucial international trade route for goods and energy. China has called for an end to disruptions of civilian ships in the Red Sea and has urged all relevant parties to refrain from exacerbating the situation, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law to protect the safety of the Red Sea shipping route.
China underscores that the Red Sea tension is a consequence of the spillover from the Gaza conflict. China believes that ending the Gaza fighting promptly is a top priority to prevent further escalation.
Additionally, China emphasizes that the UN Security Council has not authorized the use of force by any nation in Yemen, and it advocates for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen and other coastal Red Sea countries. China is willing to collaborate with all parties to de-escalate the situation and maintain security and stability in the Red Sea region.
