EU Council and Parliament Reach Provisional Deal for Clearer, Simpler, and Digital Fertiliser Labelling

The European Council and the European Parliament have reached a provisional agreement to enhance the labelling of fertilising products, making them clearer, simpler, and more digital. The proposal introduces the option of digital labels for EU fertilising products, aiming to improve label readability, promote efficient product use, and simplify labelling for suppliers, reducing industry costs.

The agreement encourages broader adoption of digital labelling while ensuring physical labels are available when essential. Digital labels will be accessible for ten years from the product's market placement. The regulation promotes digitalisation in the fertilisers sector while ensuring that all customers, including those with limited digital skills, receive clear and consumer-friendly information.

The revision allows suppliers to use physical, digital, or hybrid labelling formats. Digital-only formats are permitted for unpackaged products or when sold to non-end users. Products sold in packaging will maintain both digital and physical labels, with specific content and technological requirements for digital labels. The agreement endorses the use of digital labels for bulk products, ensuring physical information display at the point of sale.

The provisional agreement awaits endorsement and formal adoption by both the European Parliament and the Council.
