EU reaches provisional agreement on CO2 emission standards for HDVs
The European Union (EU) has reached a provisional agreement on CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), including extra heavy combinations (EHC) important for Finland. The accord, reached in tripartite negotiations on January 18, 2024, will gradually tighten emissions reduction targets for new HDVs and widen the regulation's scope.
The regulation aims to encourage vehicle manufacturers to enhance energy efficiency and increase the availability of low and zero-emission vehicles in the market. New categories of trucks, trailers, coaches, and buses will be subject to the regulation, with exceptions for certain vehicles like those used by armed forces.
Starting in 2030, emissions reduction targets for new HDVs will become stricter, aiming for a 45% reduction from 2019 levels, up from the current 30%. By 2035, the target is a 65% reduction, and by 2040, it's 90%.
Finland played an active role in ensuring the regulation considers EHC vehicles. The agreement will undergo further discussions and approvals in the EU before taking effect.
