European Media Freedom Act

EU member states' ambassadors endorsed a provisional agreement for the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), established to create a unified framework for media services within the EU's internal market and safeguard media freedom, pluralism, and editorial independence. The EMFA aims to protect journalists and media entities from political interference while facilitating their operations across EU internal borders. It also ensures citizens' access to diverse and unbiased information, with member states taking responsibility for providing suitable conditions for this.

This endorsement marks a significant milestone under the Belgian Presidency, following the efforts of the Spanish Presidency. Benjamin Dalle, Flemish Minister for Brussels Affairs, Youth, Media, and Poverty Reduction, lauded the regulation for its role in protecting journalists, sources, and promoting informed decision-making based on independent information.

The provisional agreement was reached after negotiations with the European Parliament began in October 2023 and will be finalized in all official languages before formal adoption by both institutions by April 2024.
