Hungary Secures Additional Gripen Aircraft in Sweeping Defense Deal with Sweden
In a significant move, Hungary has inked a deal with Sweden to acquire four state-of-the-art Gripen aircraft, strengthening their longstanding defense ties. The agreement, signed during the visit of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defence Minister Pål Jonson to Budapest on February 23, marks a pivotal moment in Hungary's commitment to bolstering its air capabilities.
Hungary has been operating twelve Gripen C series and two Gripen D series since 2006, operating under a lease-purchase agreement. As of early 2026, these fourteen aircraft will be fully owned by Hungary. Now, in addition to the existing fleet, Hungary is set to purchase four more Gripen aircraft, further enhancing its air force capabilities.
The JAS 39 Gripen, a pride of Sweden, is hailed as a valuable asset to NATO. Prime Minister Kristersson expressed satisfaction in contributing more Gripen aircraft to European airspace, emphasizing its significance in bolstering regional defense. The Gripen system encompasses advanced features, including underwater capabilities and radar technology, solidifying its role as a formidable force in modern air defense.
Under the terms of the agreement, Sweden commits not only to providing the four Gripen aircraft but also ensures continuous support and logistics for the entire fleet from 2026 to 2036. This comprehensive collaboration underscores the mutual trust and cooperation between the two nations.
Hungary's air force has been a commendable member of the Gripen family, contributing significantly to the system's development. Defence Minister Jonson expressed Sweden's eagerness to maintain robust cooperation with Hungary in the realm of defense. The agreement highlights the strategic partnership between Sweden and Hungary, reinforcing their commitment to collective European security.
