Indian Ministry of Defence Signs Rs 1070 Crore Deal for 14 Fast Patrol Vessels with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has sealed a contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, on January 24, 2024, worth over Rs 1070.47 crore for the acquisition of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) destined for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). These versatile FPVs will be entirely designed, developed, and manufactured by MDL under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) Category and will be delivered within a span of 63 months.
These FPVs will feature advanced technology and equipment, including multipurpose drones, wirelessly controlled remote water rescue craft lifebuoy, and AI capabilities, providing increased flexibility and operational advantages to the ICG in facing contemporary multidimensional challenges. These modern FPVs will significantly contribute to enhancing fisheries protection, surveillance, anti-smuggling operations, search and rescue missions in shallow waters, assisting distressed ships/crafts, towing capabilities, and monitoring marine pollution response and anti-piracy operations. This acquisition aims to strengthen the ICG's capabilities and aligns with the government's heightened focus on maritime security.
In line with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative, this contract will bolster the nation's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, promote maritime economic activities, and foster the growth of ancillary industries, particularly the MSME sector. Moreover, it is expected to create job opportunities and enhance expertise development within the country.
