Japan Suspends Additional Funding to UNRWA Amid Allegations of Staff Involvement in Israel Terror Attack

Japan has expressed deep concern over allegations of UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) staff members' involvement in a terror attack on Israel that occurred on October 7th of the previous year. UNRWA plays a vital role in providing essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where the humanitarian situation is worsening.

In response to these allegations, Japan has made the decision to temporarily suspend additional funding to UNRWA. This suspension will remain in place while UNRWA conducts an investigation into the matter and considers appropriate measures to address the allegations. Japan acknowledges the dedicated work of many UNRWA staff members in delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza residents.

Japan is actively urging UNRWA to conduct a thorough and prompt investigation and to take necessary measures, including strengthening governance within the organization. Concurrently, Japan will continue its diplomatic efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and work towards calming the situation by providing support to other international organizations.
