NATO Secures $1.2 Billion Artillery Ammunition Contracts to Bolster Defense
NATO has finalized contracts worth $1.2 billion for the purchase of approximately 220,000 155-millimeter artillery shells. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) General Manager Stacy Cummings presided over the agreement. This substantial procurement underscores the effectiveness of NATO's collaborative acquisition processes.
Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of replenishing ammunition stocks, particularly in light of Russia's conflict in Ukraine, which has highlighted the significance of ammunition availability. The move aligns with NATO's Defense Production Action Plan, established in July 2023, which has resulted in NSPA securing contracts worth around $10 billion for various ammunition types.
Notable contracts include $5.5 billion for 1,000 Patriot missiles and $4 billion for 155-mm artillery, anti-tank guided missiles, and tank ammunition. Additionally, NATO's procurement agency has plans to acquire six E-7A Wedgetail aircraft in 2024. These record-breaking contracts demonstrate the transatlantic defense industry's capability to bolster NATO's deterrence and defense while providing essential support to Ukraine.https://youtu.be/AsmIrUA4i34
