Philippines DENR Joins Forces with NASA to Study and Combat Air Quality Issues
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines has announced a significant partnership with NASA to address air quality concerns in the Asian region. DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga revealed that NASA will conduct specialized scientific research flights to study the atmosphere of Metro Manila and its surrounding areas. Engineers and air quality specialists from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of DENR will participate in these flights alongside NASA scientists.
This collaboration, known as the Airborne and Satellite Investigation of Asian Air Quality (ASIA-AQ), unites experts from NASA, the DENR, South Korea's National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).
Utilizing advanced satellite technology, ground-based observations, and airborne missions, the partnership aims to enhance air quality models, provide accurate forecasts, and develop effective policies for improved air quality. It is a joint effort involving the Philippine Space Agency, Manila Observatory, Ateneo de Manila University, and the University of the Philippines to combat air pollution challenges in the region. The data collected will aid in mitigating air quality issues and addressing climate change.
