Singapore and Laos Celebrate 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations at SCP Alumni Reception
During the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP) Alumni Reception in Vientiane, Laos, on January 27, 2024, Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, emphasized the enduring friendship between the two nations as they celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations. He commended the distinguished alumni from the SCP for their contributions to the Laotian community.
Dr. Balakrishnan highlighted the ongoing cooperation between Singapore and Laos, particularly in emerging areas. He mentioned the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, Singapore's first import of renewable energy from Laos, as a significant achievement. This project demonstrates the feasibility of the ASEAN Power Grid, promoting cross-border energy trading and enhancing energy security in ASEAN.
Moreover, the Minister discussed the collaboration on sustainability, emphasizing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Carbon Credits Collaboration aligned with the Paris Agreement's Article 6. Dr. Balakrishnan encouraged officials from both sides to work efficiently toward an Implementation Agreement on Carbon Credits Collaboration, creating economic opportunities for private companies in both countries.
Dr. Balakrishnan expressed Singapore's steadfast support for Laos' development and mentioned that over 16,000 Laotian officials have benefited from the SCP. He highlighted the strong bonds of trust and goodwill between the two nations and encouraged renewed commitment to their mutual friendship.
