Singapore and Laos Explore Renewable Energy and Beyond in Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties

During a doorstop interview in Vientiane, Laos, on January 27, 2024, Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, discussed the fruitful bilateral relationship between Singapore and Laos as they celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties. He highlighted the potential for cooperation in various areas, including renewable energy, carbon credits, rare earth minerals, and agriculture, considering Laos' advantageous position.

Dr. Balakrishnan emphasized Laos' potential in renewable energy, particularly hydropower and carbon credits. He also noted the emergence of rare earth mineral deposits and the country's status as a net food exporter, highlighting its potential role in contributing to food security in ASEAN.

Furthermore, the Minister mentioned ongoing projects, such as the import of renewable electricity from Laos to Singapore, as pathfinders that demonstrate the potential for cooperation. He stressed the importance of creating sustainable cross-border arrangements and regional grids to fully unlock the potential benefits for both countries and ASEAN as a whole.

Regarding the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP), which has trained over 16,000 Laotian officials, Dr. Balakrishnan highlighted the mutual exchange of ideas and trust-building between Singapore and Laos, emphasizing the goodwill and gratitude generated by the program.

Overall, Dr. Balakrishnan's visit underscores the potential for strengthened cooperation between the two nations in various fields, with a focus on mutually beneficial economic and technological advancements.
