Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, is embarking on an official visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) from January 26 to 29, 2024, at the invitation of Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saleumxay Kommasith. This visit holds special significance as it marks the commencement of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Lao PDR.
During his stay, Minister Balakrishnan will engage in discussions with senior Lao leaders in Vientiane and attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Luang Prabang. These meetings will explore opportunities to enhance bilateral and regional cooperation, with a particular focus on emerging areas like renewable energy and carbon credits.
Furthermore, Minister Balakrishnan will interact with Singaporeans in Vientiane and host a reception for Lao alumni of the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP), a testament to the shared commitment of both nations to human capital development. Since its inception in 1992, over 16,000 Lao officials have participated in SCP programs.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat, taking place under Laos' 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship, will provide a platform to discuss ASEAN's priorities for the year, including digital integration and sustainability, as well as regional and international issues. Minister Balakrishnan will be accompanied by his spouse, Mrs. Joy Balakrishnan, and officials from Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs during this significant visit.
