The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its vessels and nationals overseas. In a series of meetings, diplomatic mission heads from various regions will collaborate on enhancing security measures.
The first meeting, scheduled for January 29 in Dakar, Senegal, will gather mission heads from the Gulf of Guinea region to strategize on improving maritime security. This initiative aims to safeguard Korean vessels and nationals, especially in anticipation of the upcoming busy fishing season.
Following this, on February 1 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, mission heads responsible for the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region will concentrate on safety measures. The focus will be on protecting Korean vessels from recent attacks by Yemeni Houthis and addressing piracy threats in the Gulf of Aden area.
These meetings will bring together key officials, including Government Representative for Korean Nationals Overseas Protection and Consular Affairs Hong Seok-in, heads of Korean diplomatic missions, and representatives from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and other relevant government agencies.
