Sweden's New Development Strategy Boosts Support for Democracy and Press Freedom
Sweden's government has unveiled a new five-year development cooperation strategy, prioritizing human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The strategy aims to support free and inclusive democratic societies amid global challenges to democracy and increasing oppression. Minister Johan Forssell emphasized the strategy's focus on individuals fighting for freedom worldwide, especially in oppressive systems.
With a budget of SEK 900 million for 2024, the strategy underscores Sweden's commitment to defending human rights defenders, promoting free elections, and supporting independent journalism. This shift reflects Sweden's determination to counteract the decline in democracy and address authoritarian threats, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the misuse of digital technology for oppression and disinformation.
