Three new European Capitals of Culture in 2024
In 2024, Bad Ischl (Austria), Bodø (Norway), and Tartu (Estonia) are European Capitals of Culture.
Bad Ischl, leading 23 Alpine region municipalities, presents "23 for 24" with the theme "Culture is the New Salt," referencing the region's historical wealth from salt. The program, consisting of 178 main and 100 associated projects, explores remembrance culture, addressing historical aspects like the House of Habsburg and National Socialism, while also embracing contemporary art focusing on sustainable cultural tourism.
Bodø, the northernmost European Capital of Culture, introduces "Arcticulation" across Nordland, hosting over 1000 events throughout the year. Themes revolve around arctic nature, the north's role in European heritage, and future regional development.
Tartu, under the theme "Arts of Survival," aims to create a nature-friendly cultural city fostering trust in human closeness. With over 1000 projects for all ages, the city seeks to showcase the strength of Europe's smaller cities. Each capital emphasizes unique aspects of their cultural heritage, promoting artistic interventions, and fostering a sense of community throughout the year.
