Timor-Leste Prime Minister's State Visit Strengthens Ties with Indonesia
Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao received a warm welcome from Indonesian President Joko Widodo during his state visit to the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java. The visit began with an elaborate ceremony, including the playing of national anthems, a 19-gun salute, and an inspection of troops. Following these formalities, the two leaders introduced their respective delegations.
During their bilateral meeting, President Jokowi and PM Gusmao discussed and agreed upon several significant matters. Firstly, they expressed their commitment to resolving border negotiations, including the reactivation of the joint border committee and cross-border posts.
Secondly, both countries pledged to enhance economic cooperation, focusing on creating a favorable investment climate and engaging Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises in projects like road construction and airport expansion in Timor-Leste.
Thirdly, Indonesia and Timor-Leste aimed to boost telecommunications infrastructure by signing a Memorandum of Understanding on information technology cooperation, including fiber optic investments.
Lastly, Indonesia affirmed its support for Timor-Leste's full membership in ASEAN and discussed regional issues like Myanmar while expressing appreciation for PM Gusmao's visit as a sign of strengthened relations between the two countries.
