Turkey Reiterates Commitment to Montreux Convention Amid Black Sea Security Concerns
Turkey's Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, reaffirmed the country's commitment to fully adhere to the provisions of the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits. Speaking after discussions with Bulgarian counterpart Mariya Gabriel, Fidan emphasized that there is no doubt about Turkey's dedication to implementing the Montreux Convention in its entirety.
This statement comes after Turkey's National Security Council expressed its readiness to maintain peace and stability in the Black Sea by upholding the Montreux Convention's provisions earlier in January. The Montreux Convention, signed in 1936, grants Turkey sovereignty over the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits while regulating the passage of warships and allowing freedom of passage for civilian ships.
The reaffirmation of Turkey's adherence to the convention comes amid international attention on the Black Sea, with the UK's recent announcement of transferring minesweepers to Ukraine to enhance security and exports in the region. Turkey has consistently emphasized its commitment to the Montreux Convention and regional stability.
