Professor Dame Angela McLean, the UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser, recently embarked on a visit to the United States with a focus on strengthening biological security ties between the two nations. Her trip involved the launch of the US-UK Strategic Dialogue on Biological Security and included visits to various US laboratories. The initiative was officially signed by UK Deputy National Security Adviser Matt Collins and US Homeland Security Advisor Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall.
Professor Dame Angela McLean emphasized the importance of protecting both countries from biological threats, highlighting the significance of collaboration in addressing a diverse spectrum of challenges. During her visit, she engaged in discussions with scientists, scientific advisers, and biosecurity companies, fostering a commitment to safeguarding the health and economic resilience of citizens.
In addition to launching the dialogue, the GCSA participated in roundtable discussions on UK-US science and technology collaboration, national strategies, and biosecurity challenges. She also met with senior scientists at the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, strengthening bilateral relationships and knowledge exchange.
Furthermore, Professor Dame Angela McLean toured various renowned US institutions, including MIT's Synthetic Biology Center, Boston University's DAMP Lab, and the Broad Institute, focusing on biosecurity, synthetic biology, innovation, and the UK Science and Technology Framework. These interactions underscored the shared commitment to advancing biosecurity measures and responsible innovation in the face of emerging threats.
