UK Foreign Secretary Discusses Hostage Crisis and Peace Efforts with Israeli Prime Minister
UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron held a crucial meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on January 24, 2024. During their discussion, Lord Cameron expressed the UK's unwavering support for Israel's efforts to secure the release of 136 hostages taken in a Hamas attack on October 7. He called for an immediate humanitarian pause to allow for the safe release of hostages and the delivery of aid, leading to a sustainable ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities. Lord Cameron stressed that for this to occur, Hamas must agree to release all hostages and cease firing rockets from Gaza, while arrangements should be made for the Palestinian Authority to return to Gaza for governance, services, and security.
The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of a political strategy aimed at achieving a lasting peace, including a credible pathway to establish a Palestinian State alongside Israel. The leaders also discussed the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid in Gaza, with Lord Cameron urging Israel to open more crossing points and support UN efforts for effective aid distribution. Additionally, he called for measures to ensure the safety of medical personnel and facilities in Gaza.
During his visit to Jerusalem, Lord Cameron also met with Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, Minister without Portfolio Benny Gantz, and Palestine Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
