The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in more than 200 billion euros in direct financial losses for Germany, according to Marcel Fratzscher, President of the German Institute for Economic Research.

In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Fratzscher highlighted the severe impact of high energy costs stemming from the crisis, which reduced Germany's economic growth by 2.5 percentage points or about 100 billion euros in 2022 alone, with similar losses continuing into the current year. These costs represent just the immediate financial implications, with further losses expected from escalated geopolitical and geo-economic conflicts affecting export-oriented businesses significantly.
